Google | YahooDigging for Gold: Using Public Records Requests and Subpoenas Duces Tecum for Effective Case Investigation

Utilizing Public Records Requests (PDRs) and Subpoenas Duces Tecum (SDTs) as part of your case investigation can provide a gold mine of information when investigating a case. We will discuss the differences in these investigative tools, when to use a PDR versus a SDT, and how to frame the requests in order to maximize the chances of receiving information helpful to your investigation.
Kristen Murray is a veteran trial lawyer with 20 years of experience. She graduated from The University of Texas School of Law in 2002 and was awarded the prestigious E. Barrett Prettyman Fellowship through Georgetown University Law Center in Washington DC. During her fellowship, Kristen represented indigent clients facing criminal charges in adult and juvenile court. In 2005, Kristen moved to Seattle and joined The Defender Association where she defended indigent clients facing primarily felony charges. She is currently a partner in the criminal defense firm of Hart Jarvis Murray Chang PLLC and represents clients in federal and state courts. Kristen has defended clients facing all types of criminal allegations, including complex homicides and sex offenses. In addition to her trial experience, she has litigated appellate matters and enjoys researching, writing, and crafting legal arguments. Kristen has argued in front of the Washington Court of Appeals, Washington Supreme Court, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Julie Armijo is the owner of Lotus Mitigation and Investigation, LLC, and Second Chance Advocates. She graduated summa cum laude from Arizona State University with a master’s degree in Forensic Psychology and a Graduate Certificate in Criminal Sentencing and Sentencing Advocacy. She also has degrees and educational background in criminal justice, forensic science, and business administration. She has been a licensed private investigator since 2005 and began specialized work as a mitigation specialist in 2012. She has also had the unique experience of working within the courts as a judicial assistant for a Superior Court judge. Her caseload has been comprised of serious adult and juvenile felonies, capital cases, 2nd/3rd strike cases, and “life” cases, but her passion and expertise are cases involving youth and young adults, including Miller, Houston-Sconiers, and Domingo-Cornelio/Ali resentencing matters.
